Chapter 3 from the Welding Handbook, Tenth Edition, Volume 1, “Welding Science and Technology,” has been selected by the AWS Product Development Committee as a service to industry professionals. In this chapter, heat flow for three main types of welding/joining processes will be introduced: arc welding (AW), high energy beam welding (HEBW)—such as, laser beam welding (LBW), and electron beam welding (EBW)—and solid-state welding (SSW), such as friction stir welding (FSW). The main modes of heat transfer in welding are: conduction, convection, and radiation. One, or a combination, of these types of heat transfers can be dominant, depending on the type of welding process.
